– Saveur Magazine

“(The) Maine river gives this bigger bivalve its butteriness and soft brininess—all told, it’s a perfect oyster”
– Boston Magazine

“…a rare and spectacular jewel from the sea.”
-The Connoisseur’s Guide to Oyster Eating

You will also want to stop in King Eider’s Pub located in downtown Damariscotta, Maine where they offer a beautiful variety of cooked and raw local oysters http://www.kingeiderspub.com/home.aspx . The atmosphere has this wonderful English pub feel and is a great pit stop for families too.

Once you have picked up your oysters or had your tasting, you’ll want to continue on to take a hike at one of our incredible natural hiking preserves called Whaleback Shell Midden Historic Site which contains historic massive oyster shell heaps . https://www.damariscottariver.org/trail/whaleback-shell-midden-state-historic-site/  Located on 11 acres right on the beautiful Damariscotta River.  The site once contained a massive oyster shell heap or midden formed over a period of more than 1,000 years by Native Americans. The shells were processed for chicken feed in the late 1800’s, leaving behind just a fraction of the original mounds. A swinging bench by the shore affords an ideal view of one of the largest intact middens on the east coast, the Glidden Midden, just across the river. A small loop trail through an historic orchard.  On your way back, you will want to get an ice cream at the local Round Top Ice Cream Shop which is another historic landmark as well.
